As technology advanced, E-Bike motors began their development, and since then, they’ve become more popular with e-bike enthusiasts.

Yes. Many E-Bike motors are brushless motors, which means they have a commutator inside that helps power the motor. This also means the bearings can be replaceable and allow for some routine maintenance. In addition you can use them to build a motor that can power a regular pedal bike.

You can do about anything with an E-Bike motor. That’s why the E-Bike industry is so forgiving.

You can use any bike for an electric bicycle, and most people prefer regular bikes from popular brands such as Trek or Specialized.

The E-Bike makes up the rest, and if you have a good battery and a good motor, you can have a very powerful electric bike.

How Do You Disassemble A Hub Motor?

You can disassemble a hub motor by removing the wheel and its axle from the bike, then removing the wheel spokes. A locking ring holds the hub motor onto the wheel.

The easiest way to remove this ring is with a set of pliers. Once removed, grip the hub motor with your other hand and pull straight up to remove it from your bike wheel.

You can also use these pliers to remove the lock ring on a tire if you want to replace one or inflate one for a different size or shape.

They think that having a kit like that would mean one could only use it for bikes with a rear hub motor. That is not the case.

There are different electric bike conversion kits – some sold to replace the front wheel hub, while others to replace the rear wheel hub.

The only difference is in price and ease of installation.

Can You Ride An E-Bike With A Flat Battery?

Yes. Thanks to advancements in battery technology and bike design, riding an E-Bike with a flat battery is easy. All you have to do is:

  • Know how much juice your battery has left.
  • Learn the rules of thumb that the manufacturers will tell you they recommend (which are just a couple of years old now.).
  • Practice riding on your flat battery until you can perform these techniques automatically, without thinking about them.

Once you’ve mastered these, your battery won’t give you any trouble, and you’ll be able to ride almost anywhere with various E-Bike styles and top speeds. Here’s how.

Range (how much your battery will carry) is usually in amp-hours. It’s like the amount of gas in a tank (gasoline, diesel fuel, etc.).

The higher the range rating for your battery, the more gas your tank will hold.

Here comes the tricky part: No E-Bike manufacturer will tell you how much power their batteries can deliver–at least not in miles per hour or kilowatts.

Instead, they’ll tell you – you should expect a range of X miles per hour (typically 20-40 mph) and a top speed of Y mph (typically 20-25 miles per hour).

Batteries are like boats: They’re rated for their load capacity (a specific number of bags or people), not for how fast or far they can go.

Your battery’s rated range is chemistry and size-based. There are two main types of E-Bike batteries: lead-acid and lithium-ion. Lead-acid batteries are the cheapest and heaviest.

They come in sizes from 12 volts to 36 volts, but you will often find the same batteries sold at different voltages.

For example, a “12 volt” lead-acid battery is 12.8 volts (12V x 1.1 = 13, then round down – it’s always better to have mismatched digits slightly less than your target slightly more).

I’ll use the generic term “V” for all lead-acid batteries for consistency.

Per pound, lead-acid batteries (LiFePO4 is about 1/4 the weight of LiPo) can deliver about 1/10 the power of lithium-ion batteries.

For example, a 20-pound V battery might have a 50 amp-hour capacity, which would give it an equivalent range of about 15 miles per hour (20 mph x 50 ah = 1000 Wh =.1 kWh = ~17 miles per kWh) and a top speed of ~ ten mph.

(A 20-pound LiPo battery would provide a similar range but a top speed of ~40 mph, so lithium-ion batteries are about four times more powerful for the same weight.)

The key problem with lead-acid batteries is that they rarely come with plugs for the charger. They’re much more challenging to operate safely and efficiently than lithium-ion batteries.

My recommendation is: If you want something cheap that will get you back home if you run out of power, get a lead-acid battery.
